Chorismate lyase is a C-C lyase that cleaves chorismate into 4-hydroxybenzoate and pyruvate. It catalyzes the first step in ubiquinone biosynthesis in E. coli and other Gram-negative bacteria; the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae can synthesize ubiquinone from either chorismate or tyrosine. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. Structurally it is a small alpha-helical chorismate-pyruvate lyase (UbiC).
