EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.21 Serine endopeptidases > 3.4.21.1 chymotrypsin
Chymotrypsin is a serine endopeptidase in family S1 (trypsin family); chymotrypsin A is formed from cattle and pig chymotrypsinogen A with several isoforms according to the number of bonds hydrolysed in the precursor, and chymotrypsin B (formerly EC 3.4.4.6), from chymotrypsinogen B, is homologous; enzymes of similar specificity have been isolated from many species; it preferentially cleaves Tyr, Trp, Phe and Leu bonds. By digesting dietary proteins in the small intestine it completes pancreatic proteolysis. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
