Coagulation factor IXa is a chymotrypsin-homologous serine protease in family S1 and one of the gamma-carboxyglutamic-acid-containing coagulation factors; the proenzyme factor IX is activated by factor XIa, and it selectively cleaves the Arg-Ile bond in factor X to form factor Xa. By propagating the intrinsic coagulation cascade it drives blood coagulation. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
