Coagulation factor VIIa is an activated serine protease in family S1 formed from factor VII precursor; the cattle enzyme is more readily inhibited by diisopropyl fluorophosphate than the human, and it selectively cleaves the Arg-Ile bond in factor X to form factor Xa. By initiating the extrinsic coagulation cascade it drives blood coagulation. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
