Coagulation factor XIa is a serine protease in family S1 and one of the gamma-carboxyglutamic-acid-containing coagulation factors; proenzyme factor XI is activated by factor XIIa, and it selectively cleaves Arg-Ala and Arg-Val bonds in factor IX to form factor IXa. By propagating the contact-activation coagulation cascade it drives blood coagulation. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
