Coagulation factor XIIa (Hageman factor) is a contact-activation serine protease in family S1 formed from factor XII by plasma kallikrein or factor XIIa, which also activates plasminogen and plasma prokallikrein; it selectively cleaves Arg-Ile bonds in factor VII to form VIIa and in factor XI to form XIa. By initiating the contact-activation cascade it triggers coagulation, inflammation and bradykinin generation. It is taxonomically restricted to Tetrapoda.
