Codeinone reductase (NADPH) catalyzes the reversible reduction of codeinone to codeine, a direct precursor of morphine in the opium poppy Papaver somniferum. Written oxidatively, it converts codeine to codeinone, concomitantly reducing NADP+ to NADPH and releasing H+. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
