Complement subcomponent C1r is a classical-pathway serine protease in family S1 activated from proenzyme C1r in plasma during classical complement activation; it selectively cleaves a Lys(or Arg)-Ile bond in C1s to form active C1s. By autoactivating and then activating C1s it initiates the classical complement cascade. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
