Cruzipain is a cysteine endopeptidase of peptidase family C1, located in the digestive vacuoles of the parasitic trypanosome Trypanosoma cruzi. It contributes to parasite nutrition by digesting host proteins and has broad endopeptidase specificity similar to that of cathepsin L. In the host it is a major virulence factor and drug target for Chagas disease. It features a papain-like catalytic fold with a unique C-terminal domain that carries antigenic repeats.
