Cucumisin is a plant subtilisin-like serine endopeptidase in family S8 from the sarcocarp of musk melon (Cucumis melo), hydrolysing proteins with broad specificity; other less well-characterised plant serine endopeptidases include euphorbain from Euphorbia cerifera, solanain from Solanum elaeagnifolium, hurain from Hura crepitans and tabernamontanain from Tabernamontana grandiflora. By digesting fruit proteins it supports fruit ripening and proteolysis. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
