Cyanase is a carbamoyl-transfer/hydratase enzyme found in bacteria and plants that decomposes cyanate, which can then serve as the sole nitrogen source. In the presence of bicarbonate it converts cyanate and bicarbonate into ammonia and two CO2 (or via carbamate, carbamate plus CO2). Structurally it is a decameric cyanase with a carbamoyl-phosphate-synthase-like active site.
