Cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) is the cell-cycle-engine Ser/Thr kinase. It is activated only upon binding a cyclin regulatory subunit; sequential synthesis and destruction of cyclins activates/inactivates CDKs, which phosphorylate retinoblastoma, lamins and other cell-cycle substrates, releasing ADP. It is the primary cell-cycle regulator in eukaryotes. It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
