DNA helicase
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.6 Acting on acid anhydrides > 3.6.4 Acting on acid anhydrides to facilitate cellular and subcellular movement > 3.6.4.12 DNA helicase
DNA helicase uses ATP hydrolysis to unwind double-stranded DNA; some move 3' to 5', others 5' to 3' or bidirectionally, and some unwind both DNA and RNA; it may be identical with EC 3.6.4.13 RNA helicase. It hydrolyzes ATP into ADP and phosphate. In replication, repair and recombination it melts duplex DNA. It features a Superfamily 1/2 helicase fold.
