Drimenol synthase is a bicyclic sesquiterpene alcohol cyclase/hydrolase isolated from Valeriana officinalis (valerian) and Persicaria hydropiper (water pepper), which does not act on farnesol or drimenol diphosphate; using 18O-labelled water, 18O is incorporated, suggesting involvement of a stabilised carbocation or equivalent species. By cyclising and dephosphorylating farnesyl diphosphate it produces the drimane sesquiterpene alcohol drimenol, contributing to plant medicinal-terpenoid biosynthesis.
