E1 SAMP-activating enzyme

Definition:

EC Tree > 6 Ligases > 6.2 Forming carbon-sulfur bonds > 6.2.1 Acid-thiol ligases > 6.2.1.55 E1 SAMP-activating enzyme
E1 SAMP-activating enzyme contains Zn2+; it activates SAMPs (Small Archaeal Modifier Proteins), ubiquitin-like proteins found only in Archaea. SAMPs participate in protein degradation and act as sulfur carriers in thiolation of tRNA and other metabolites such as molybdopterin. It catalyzes ATP-dependent formation of a SAMP-AMP thioester on the E1 cysteine. Structurally it is an ubiquitin-like E1 (Uba4).
