Ectoine synthase is a cyclic dehydratase in the osmoprotectant pathway. It acts only in the direction of ectoine formation, cyclizing (2S)-4-acetamido-2-aminobutanoate into L-ectoine and water. Ectoine is an osmoprotectant found in halophilic eubacteria. It is compared with EC 3.5.4.44, ectoine hydrolase. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. Structurally it is a cyclic ornithine amidinotransferase-fold ectoine synthase.
