EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.2 Glycosylases > 3.2.1 Glycosidases, i.e. enzymes that hydrolyse O- and S-glycosyl compounds > 3.2.1.15 endo-polygalacturonase
Endo-polygalacturonase is a pectin-degrading endoglycosidase that catalyses the random hydrolysis of (1->4)-alpha-D-galactosiduronic linkages in pectate and other galacturonans; different forms show different tolerance to methyl esterification of the substrate. By macerating middle-lamella pectin it is a major plant-cell-wall-loosening and fruit-softening enzyme and a microbial phytopathogen virulence factor. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
