Endonuclease Bax1 is a structure-specific endonuclease from Thermoplasma acidophilum that recognises DNA carrying a 3' overhang and specifically incises the single-stranded region 4–6 nucleotides away from the single-stranded/double-stranded junction, acting as a structure-specific rather than sequence-specific endonuclease. By processing branched and 3'-overhang DNA it supports archaeal nucleotide-excision-like repair and replication restart. It contains an XPF-like nuclease domain.
