EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.21 Serine endopeptidases > 3.4.21.53 Endopeptidase La
Endopeptidase La (Lon protease) is the product of the E. coli lon gene and the type example of peptidase family S16, an ATP-dependent serine protease in which ATP hydrolysis is linked to peptide-bond hydrolysis (both inhibited by vanadate) and a similar enzyme occurs in animal mitochondria; it hydrolyses proteins in the presence of ATP. By degrading damaged and regulatory proteins in an ATP-dependent manner it maintains bacterial and mitochondrial protein quality control. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
