Endopeptidase So is an Escherichia coli cytoplasmic serine endopeptidase (formerly EC 3.4.21.14) inhibited by Tos-Phe-CH2Cl but not by Tos-Lys-CH2Cl; it hydrolyses proteins but not Bz-Tyr-OEt, Ac-Phe-beta-naphthylester or Bz-Arg-OEt. By degrading cytosolic proteins it supports bacterial protein turnover. It is distributed across Bacteria and Eukaryota.
