Exo-chitinase (reducing end)
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.2 Glycosylases > 3.2.1 Glycosidases, i.e. enzymes that hydrolyse O- and S-glycosyl compounds > 3.2.1.201 exo-chitinase (reducing end)
Exo-chitinase (reducing end) is a processive exochitinase that hydrolyses the second glycosidic (1->4) linkage from the reducing ends of chitin and chitodextrins, liberating N,N'-diacetylchitobiose disaccharides (cf. exo-chitinase non-reducing end EC 3.2.1.200). By processively clipping chitobiose from the reducing end it contributes to bacterial and archaeal chitin degradation. It is distributed across Bacteria and Archaea.
