Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.1 Acting on ester bonds > 3.1.4 Phosphoric-diester hydrolases > 3.1.4.20 exoribonuclease
Exoribonuclease is a processive 3'-to-5' or 5'-to-3' nuclease of the EC 3.1.x family that degrades RNA fragments mononucleotide by mononucleotide. By clearing unused transcripts and surveillance substrates it controls mRNA half-life, RNA quality control and small-RNA biogenesis in cellular organisms.
