EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.22 Cysteine endopeptidases > 3.4.22.B69 falcipain-2
Falcipain-2 is a Plasmodium papain-family cysteine protease that plays a key role in hemoglobin hydrolysis by the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Preferred cleavage sites display Arg at P1, Leu at P2 and Phe at P1'. In the parasite food vacuole it digests host hemoglobin to provide amino acids. It is a major antimalarial drug target. It features a papain-like catalytic fold with a hemoglobin-specific substrate-binding cleft.
