Farnesol kinase
Definition:
EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.7 Transferring phosphorus-containing groups > 2.7.1 Phosphotransferases with an alcohol group as acceptor > 2.7.1.216 farnesol kinase
Farnesol kinase is the isoprenoid-alcohol salvage kinase of plants and animals. It phosphorylates (2E,6E)-farnesol on the terminal hydroxyl using CTP, releasing CDP and (2E,6E)-farnesyl phosphate; other NTPs work less efficiently. The plant enzyme also acts on geraniol and geranylgeraniol with lower activity, but not on farnesyl phosphate (cf. EC 2.7.4.32). It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms.
