Farnesyl diphosphatase is a sesquiterpenoid-biosynthetic phosphatase that hydrolyses (2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate into (2E,6E)-farnesol and diphosphate. By releasing the acyclic sesquiterpene alcohol farnesol it contributes to plant and bacterial acyclic sesquiterpenoid production, membrane modulation and quorum-sensing regulation. It is distributed across Bacteria, Eukaryota and Archaea.
