Ficain
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.22 Cysteine endopeptidases > 3.4.22.3 ficain
Ficain is the major proteolytic component of the latex of fig, Ficus glabrata, and cysteine endopeptidases with similar properties occur in other Ficus species. It belongs to peptidase family C1 (papain family) and its specificity is similar to that of papain, cleaving a broad range of peptide bonds. In the plant it contributes to wound defense and protein storage mobilization. It features the canonical papain-like catalytic cysteine-histidine-asparagine triad.
