Fucokinase is the L-fucose-salvage kinase requiring a divalent cation (Mg2+ and Fe2+ best). It phosphorylates L-fucose on the 1-hydroxyl, releasing ADP and beta-L-fucose 1-phosphate, part of the L-fucose reutilization salvage pathway; it also phosphorylates D-arabinose more slowly. Expected in Eukaryota and Bacteria.
