Fumarate hydratase is a TCA-cycle enzyme that hydrates fumarate into S-malate (or the reverse), interconverting the C4-dicarboxylates. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms and is also a moonlighting tumor-suppressor protein in mitochondria and the cytosol. Structurally it exists as a class I [4Fe-4S] iron-sulfur enzyme and a class II homodimeric non-metal enzyme.
