Galactokinase
Definition:
EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.7 Transferring phosphorus-containing groups > 2.7.1 Phosphotransferases with an alcohol group as acceptor > 2.7.1.6 galactokinase
Galactokinase is the Leloir-pathway galactose-activation enzyme. It phosphorylates alpha-D-galactose on the 1-hydroxyl, releasing ADP and alpha-D-galactose 1-phosphate, the first step of galactose metabolism; mammalian and E. coli enzymes have no activity on N-acetyl-alpha-D-galactosamine. Expected in Eukaryota, Bacteria and Archaea.
