Gastricsin is an aspartic endopeptidase formed from progastricsin, apparently in the gastric juice of most vertebrates; progastricsin is secreted in the fundus, antrum and proximal duodenum, and seminal plasma contains an immunologically identical zymogen. It belongs to peptidase family A1. It has a more restricted specificity than pepsin A but shows preferential cleavage at Tyr-/- bonds and high activity on hemoglobin. In the stomach it digests dietary proteins. It features a pepsin-like aspartic-protease fold.
