Geosmin synthase is a Mg2+-dependent bifunctional terpene cyclase. The N-terminal part is EC 4.2.3.22, germacradienol synthase, which forms germacradienol from farnesyl diphosphate (FPP); the C-terminal part converts germacradienol via (1S,4aS,8aS)-1,4a-dimethyl-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,8a-octahydronaphthalene into (-)-geosmin plus acetone. Geosmin is the odor of moist soil and is produced by bacteria, fungi and cyanobacteria. Structurally it is a duplicated class I terpene cyclase.
