Gingipain K
Definition:
EC Tree > 3 Hydrolases > 3.4 Acting on peptide bonds (peptidases) > 3.4.22 Cysteine endopeptidases > 3.4.22.47 gingipain K
Gingipain K is a lysine-specific cysteine endopeptidase from the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis, activity stimulated by glycine and belonging to peptidase family C25. It is an endopeptidase with strict specificity for lysyl bonds, and contributes to the pathogenicity of the organism by degrading host proteins, cytokines and immune effectors. In the periodontal pocket it promotes inflammation and tissue destruction. It features a catalytic cysteine within an Rgp-like fold optimized for Lys at P1.
