Ginsenosidase type IV is a protopanaxatriol-specific ginsenosidase that sequentially hydrolyses the 6-O-beta-D-(1->2)- or 6-O-alpha-D-(1->2)-glycosidic bond of protopanaxatriol-type ginsenosides carrying a disaccharide at C6, and then the remaining 6-O-beta-D-glycosidic bond, for example converting ginsenoside Re through Rg1 to F1. By trimming the C6 disaccharide it converts major triol ginsenosides into minor absorbable forms. It is distributed across Eukaryota, Bacteria and Archaea.
