Glucokinase
Definition:
EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.7 Transferring phosphorus-containing groups > 2.7.1 Phosphotransferases with an alcohol group as acceptor > 2.7.1.2 glucokinase
Glucokinase is a microbial/invertebrate glucose-specific hexokinase. It phosphorylates D-glucose at the 6-hydroxyl, releasing ADP and D-glucose 6-phosphate, and is highly specific for glucose (unlike broad-specificity hexokinase EC 2.7.1.1). It occurs in viruses and cellular organisms and is the first enzyme of microbial glycolysis.
