Gluconate dehydratase is an enolase-superfamily dehydratase in the Entner-Doudoroff pathway. It dehydrates D-gluconate into 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-D-gluconate and water, and shows no activity with D-galactonate (cf. EC 4.2.1.140). It is found in Bacteria, Archaea and Eukaryota. Structurally it is a Mg2+-dependent gluconate dehydratase.
