Glucosamine kinase is the amino-sugar-activation kinase specific for glucosamine, with only minor activity on D-glucose. Two unrelated enzymes are known: the Vibrio cholerae type participates in chitin degradation, and the actinobacterial type feeds environmental glucosamine into antibiotic biosynthesis. It phosphorylates D-glucosamine on the 6-hydroxyl, releasing ADP and D-glucosamine 6-phosphate. Expected in Bacteria and Eukaryota (cf. EC 2.7.1.147).
