Glutamate synthase (glutamine:2-oxoglutarate amidotransferase, GOGAT) is the central ammonia-assimilation enzyme that transfers the amide nitrogen of glutamine onto 2-oxoglutarate, producing two molecules of glutamate and closing the GS-GOGAT cycle of nitrogen assimilation in bacteria, plants and algae.
