Glutamine synthetase (GS) catalyzes the ATP-dependent incorporation of ammonium into L-glutamate: ATP plus L-glutamate plus ammonia yields ADP plus phosphate plus L-glutamine. It is a central enzyme of nitrogen metabolism found in all domains of life; several oligomeric types exist differing in quaternary structure and cofactor requirement. Structurally it is a GS-GOGAT-pathway enzyme.
