EC Tree > 4 Lyases > 4.99 Other lyases > 4.99.1 Sole sub-subclass for lyases that do not belong in the other subclasses > 4.99.1.8 heme ligase
Heme ligase (hemozoin synthase) is a heme-detoxifying enzyme found in Plasmodium parasites; these organisms lack the mammalian heme oxygenase and instead convert toxic ferriprotoporphyrin IX into crystalline β-hematin (hemozoin). It converts two ferriprotoporphyrin IX molecules into β-hematin. Structurally it is a heme-detoxifying crystal nucleator.
