Heme o synthase
Definition:
EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.5 Transferring alkyl or aryl groups, other than methyl groups > 2.5.1 Transferring alkyl or aryl groups, other than methyl groups (only sub-subclass identified to date) > 2.5.1.141 heme o synthase
Heme o synthase is a prenyltransferase found in many archaea, bacteria and eukaryotes. It transfers a farnesyl group from (2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate onto protoheme IX with consumption of water, releasing diphosphate and producing ferroheme o, which in many organisms is further modified into heme a. In organisms that produce heme a the enzyme forms a complex with heme a synthase; in some archaeal species it transfers a geranylgeranyl group instead of a farnesyl group. The enzyme occurs in Bacteria, Eukaryota and Archaea.
