Hexokinase
Definition:
EC Tree > 2 Transferases > 2.7 Transferring phosphorus-containing groups > 2.7.1 Phosphotransferases with an alcohol group as acceptor > 2.7.1.1 hexokinase
Hexokinase is the first ATP-dependent glycolytic kinase. It phosphorylates D-glucose (and D-mannose, D-fructose, sorbitol, D-glucosamine) on the 6-hydroxyl, releasing ADP and the corresponding hexose 6-phosphate; ITP and dATP can act as donors. The liver isoenzyme is often called glucokinase. It occurs in Eukaryota, Archaea and Bacteria.
