HtrA2 peptidase (Omi) is a mitochondrial serine peptidase in family S1C up-regulated in mammalian cells by heat-shock and tunicamycin stress; it can induce apoptosis in a caspase-independent manner through its peptidase activity and in a caspase-dependent manner by disrupting the interaction between caspase and inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP); it cleaves non-polar aliphatic P1 residues, preferentially Val, Ile and Met, and at P2/P3 selects Arg most strongly with secondary preference for other hydrophilic residues. By degrading IAPs it promotes programmed cell death. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms.
