Hyaluronate lyase is a bacterial glycosaminoglycan β-eliminase. It degrades hyaluronan by beta-elimination at the beta-D-GlcNAc-(1->4)-beta-D-GlcA bond, ultimately breaking the polysaccharide into 3-(4-deoxy-beta-D-gluc-4-enuronosyl)-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine disaccharides; it also acts on chondroitin. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms and is a spreading factor in streptococci. Structurally it is a hyaluronate lyase (PL8/PL33) with an alpha-helical catalytic tower.
