Hydroxymandelonitrile lyase

Definition:

EC Tree > 4 Lyases > 4.1 Carbon-carbon lyases > 4.1.2 Aldehyde-lyases > 4.1.2.11 hydroxymandelonitrile lyase
Hydroxymandelonitrile lyase is a hydroxynitrile-lyase in the aldehyde-lyase class. It catalyzes the cleavage of (S)-4-hydroxymandelonitrile into cyanide and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Unlike EC 4.1.2.10, EC 4.1.2.46 and EC 4.1.2.47, it does not accept aliphatic hydroxynitriles. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. It contributes to cyanogenic defense in plants and to the degradation of aromatic cyanogenic glycosides. Structurally it is an aromatic-hydroxynitrile-specific lyase.
