Hydroxynitrilase
Definition:
EC Tree > 4 Lyases > 4.1 Carbon-carbon lyases > 4.1.2 Aldehyde-lyases > 4.1.2.39 hydroxynitrilase
Hydroxynitrilase is a hydroxynitrile lyase from rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and cassava (Manihot esculenta) that accepts a broad range of aliphatic and aromatic hydroxynitriles, unlike EC 4.1.2.11. 2-Hydroxyisobutyronitrile (acetone cyanohydrin) is liberated by glycosidase action on linamarin. The enzyme cleaves cyanohydrins into cyanide and the corresponding carbonyl compound, providing a defense against herbivores and pathogens in these cyanogenic plants. Structurally it is a non-heme flavoprotein hydroxynitrilase.
