Iodide peroxidase (thyroid peroxidase) catalyzes biosynthesis of the thyroid hormones L-thyroxine and triiodo-L-thyronine. It iodinates tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin (forming mono- and diiodotyrosine) and couples them to form L-thyroxine or triiodothyronine, using H2O2 and iodide. It also oxidizes 2 iodide plus H2O2 and 2 H+ to diiodine and 2 H2O.
