Isopenicillin-N epimerase

Definition:

EC Tree > 5 Isomerases > 5.1 Racemases and epimerases > 5.1.1 Acting on amino acids and derivatives > 5.1.1.17 isopenicillin-N epimerase
Isopenicillin-N epimerase contains pyridoxal phosphate. It epimerizes at C-5 of the 5-amino-5-carboxypentanoyl side chain to convert isopenicillin N into penicillin N, making a substrate for EC 1.14.20.1 (deacetoxycephalosporin-C synthase) to produce cephalosporins. It forms part of the penicillin biosynthesis pathway. It is found in Bacteria and Eukaryota. Structurally it is a PLP-dependent isopenicillin N epimerase.
