Isoprene synthase is a Mg2+-/Mn2+-dependent chloroplastic enzyme in isoprene-emitting plants such as poplar and aspen; it may be activated by light-dependent changes in chloroplast pH and Mg2+ concentration. It converts dimethylallyl (prenyl) diphosphate into isoprene and diphosphate, releasing the volatile hydrocarbon that protects leaves against heat and oxidative stress. It is found in Eukaryota and Bacteria. Structurally it is a class I terpene synthase.
