Kexin (kex2 protease) is a Ca2+-activated subtilisin-like proprotein convertase in family S8, containing Cys near active-site His and inhibited by p-mercuribenzoate, with similar enzymes in mammals; it cleaves Lys-Arg and Arg-Arg bonds to process the yeast alpha-factor pheromone and killer-toxin precursors. By processing fungal mating pheromones and killer toxin it enables yeast secretion.
