L-Piperazate synthase contains heme b. Characterized from Kutzneria sp. 744, it is one of very few enzymes known to form an N-N bond: it converts N5-hydroxy-L-ornithine into (3S)-1,2-diazinane-3-carboxylate (piperazate) and water. Piperazate is incorporated by NRPS or NRPS/PKS-hybrid pathways into secondary metabolites such as kutznerides, padanamides, himastatins and sanglifehrins. It appears in viruses and cellular organisms. Structurally it is a heme-dependent N-N bond-forming oxidase.
